Programs and Services

In 2010 the Blue Mountain Humane Society will celebrate its 43rd anniversary of preventing cruelty and promoting kindness to companion animals. Operating the only animal shelter facility within a 45 mile radius, the society serves all of Walla Walla County and much of Umatilla and Columbia Counties.

The society is committed to eliminating the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable pets by ending overpopulation and homelessness. To these ends, the society provides shelter, spay / neuter, foster care, adoption, and re-homing services for companion animals, as well as education, animal control, and cruelty and neglect investigation services.

During 2009 the society found forever homes for 709 companion animals. New partnerships with rescue organizations around the state allowed for the transfer of 150 animals, each one resulting in a successful adoption. Animals awaiting adoption are updated in real time on this website. Now it is possible and increasingly more common for potential adopters from Idaho, western Washington and Oregon to visit a pet in our shelter that they found online.

Shelter Hours

The shelter is open Monday through Friday from 12:00pm to 6:00pm, and on Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. You can also find our adoptable dogs and cats at Petco one weekend a month and on many Saturdays in the summer at the local Farmers' Market. Please call the shelter during business hours to verify our schedule of appearances for the week.

Foster Parent Program

You can help us expand our capacity by serving as a foster parent. New mothers with kittens or pups, as well as injured and unhealthy animals are better cared for in a home where they will receive plenty of support from caring parents.

Ideally, these animals do not return to the shelter, but are adopted right out of their foster parents’ homes. As the animals approach adoptability, we will call on you to make the animal available for a scheduled visit at the shelter or at your home.

Acting as a foster parent is a true rewarding labor of love. It is a great responsibility as well. All foster parents are carefully screened.

Lost and Found, Strays, Abuse, Animal Control

To report your lost pet or one that you have found, or to report neighborhood strays, dangerous animals or cases of animal abuse:

Re-Homing your pet

After you have exhausted all other options, the shelter may assist you in placing your companion animals with another owner as there is space available at the shelter. Before bringing your animal to the shelter, please call 509.525.2452 to discuss your situation and confirm available space.

Dog Licensing

City and County ordinances require that all dogs over the age of 4 months living within the city limits or within the county's dog control zone must wear a current license tag. Even dogs that live primarily indoors are required to be licensed. Your pet’s ID Licensing helps ensure the safe and timely return of your pet should it be lost. About 95 percent of lost animals that wear current identification are reunited with their owners. Please also keep in mind that ownership of a pet can be difficult to prove if the pet is not wearing current tags.

Community Outreach

We can be found at the Farmers' Market, Petco, and various public locations and events as well as at the local schools with our adoptable companion animals and educational material. We are always in need of volunteers who can ensure for the continued success of these outreach programs.
